How I Naturally Induced Labor with Twins: My Story and Tips
how I naturally induced labor with twins: My story & Tips
If you’ve been following me, you know I’m a new mom of twins. Over the years, I’ve studied and practiced as a doula and a personal chef, which gave me the confidence—and curiosity—to explore natural ways to help my body get ready for labor.
My pregnancy was surprisingly smooth, all things considered, with just a few aches and growing belly fatigue along the way. By 37.5 weeks, both babies were full-term, but Ora, my girl, had Intrauterine Growth Restriction (IUGR) due to how her placenta developed. We were monitoring her closely, and during a routine check-up at 37 weeks, my specialist said she wanted to induce labor immediately.
I felt torn. As a doula, I knew medical induction is sometimes necessary—but it can also be invasive, exhausting, and spiral into interventions. My intuition told me that everything would be okay, and my body could do this naturally. I was ready to try what I’d learned in practice, knowing I was full-term and had nothing to lose.

My Natural Labor Induction Journey
I started my regimen on Tuesday, and by Saturday night at 10 PM—after a calming meditation session—my water broke. Labor progressed quickly, and I had a vaginal birth. (I’ll share the full birth story soon.)
Here’s what I did, in case it helps other moms who want to explore gentle, natural methods. Everything I used is vegan-friendly, and please remember: this is my personal experience, not medical advice. Always check with your healthcare provider.
1. Red Raspberry Leaf Tea
I drank about two 32-ounce mason jars a day leading up to labor. This tea is known to tone the uterus, helping contractions work efficiently once labor begins.
Extra perks: It’s full of vitamin C, E, calcium, and iron, and sipping it warm felt comforting in those last days.
2. Dates
I ate roughly eight Medjool dates daily. Studies suggest dates can help ripen the cervix and even reduce the need for medical induction. They’re sweet, nutrient-dense, and packed with potassium, magnesium, and fiber—perfect for a late-pregnancy energy boost.
3. Okra Water
Yes, okra water! Some people swear it helps the baby “slide out” more easily and keeps you hydrated. While I can’t scientifically confirm it, Ora was born within five minutes, and I didn’t tear. 🙂
Bonus: Okra is high in vitamins and antioxidants.
4. Meditation (Hypnobirth)
This one surprised me the most. I had no signs of labor until I let myself fully relax into the guided meditation I listed below. I sipped my tea, cleared my mind, and trusted my body. I fell asleep immediately after the mediation and the I woke up 2 hour later, I hopped in the shower—and my water broke.
Benefits: Meditation lowers stress, reduces anxiety, and signals to your body that you’re ready.
5. Evening Primrose Oil
I used this orally and topically near my due date. It contains GLA, which can help the cervix ripen and increase elasticity. Always use after 37 weeks. I like this brand from Amazon because its organic and a brand I’ve trusted over the years.
Bonus: Supports skin health and can reduce inflammation.
6. Curb Walking
Walking was a game-changer. Even tired, I’d go on short walks or run small errands, moving my pelvis in a rocking motion that encourages the baby to settle lower.
Why it works: Improves pelvic alignment, stimulates contractions, boosts circulation, and keeps energy levels up.
7. Pedicure / Foot Acupressure
I treated myself to a pedicure on Saturday morning—part self-care, part acupressure. Reflexology points in the feet can help encourage labor, and honestly, it was a relaxing way to prepare my body.
Extra Natural Tips
Acupuncture: Ancient method to stimulate labor points.
Spicy foods: Anecdotally said to trigger contractions.
Nipple stimulation: Releases oxytocin, which can help contractions.
Pineapple: Bromelain may help soften the cervix.
Clary sage oil: Can be diffused, added to baths, or used in massage.
Herbal supplements: Black and blue cohosh—use only under professional guidance.
Trust Your Body
These techniques worked for me, but everyone’s body is different. Always consult your healthcare provider before trying natural induction methods. The most important part? Trust your body, stay calm, and give yourself grace. Your baby will come when they’re ready.
Have you tried any natural methods to induce labor? I’d love to hear your experiences—share them in the comments! And if this post helps, please share it with other expecting moms.
